About

Dear reader,

We are excited to welcome you to this year’s FMF symposium. For those new to the event or the association, this annual event is organized by the Symcie committee of the FMF, the study association for (Applied) Mathematics, (Applied) Physics, and Astronomy at the University of Groningen. Every aspect of the symposium—from reaching out to sponsors and speakers to finding the perfect location—is carried out by dedicated students in their spare time.

Each year, we explore a new theme, and for this 2026 edition, we’ve chosen Motifs of Science. Patterns, or in other words motifs, are everywhere in the world around us. From fibbonacci spirals in flowers to self-similar patterns in the sky, a lot of things have some kind of order and structure to them.

Join us as we embark on a journey to explore the moments when the world tips into something new and unexpected. The symposium will take place on February 3rd, 2026, in Groningen. For more information, browse through the FMF Symposium website to discover our speakers and the program. If you wish to attend, keep an eye on the official FMF channels; sign-ups will open soon!

We look forward to seeing you there!

The best student symposium I've ever witnessed

prof. Philip Moriarty

It was a really great event to be a part of, and I have to say that it was also one of the best-organised events that I've been involved in for a long time
